BEFORE YOU START

A little detail makes it lovely.

A food thermometer is the reliable way to check ground beef. Color alone cannot tell you it is safely cooked.

Let's make it

  1. 01

    Prepare the toppings

Mix mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard. Wash and dry the lettuce and slice the tomato. Keep these away from raw beef and its utensils.

  2. 02

    Shape the patties

Divide beef into four equal patties, slightly wider than the buns. Season with salt and pepper. Wash hands and any surfaces that touched raw meat.

  3. 03

    Cook thoroughly

Heat a heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties for approximately 4–6 minutes per side, adjusting as needed, until the center reaches 160°F (71°C). Add cheese for the last minute. Use a clean plate for cooked patties.

  4. 04

    Build the burgers

Toast the buns if desired. Spread with sauce, then add lettuce, tomato, and the cooked cheeseburger patties. Serve promptly.
