A little detail makes it lovely.

Let's make it

  1. 01

    Fill the pot

Place spaghetti, crushed tomatoes, water, oil, garlic, salt, and optional red pepper flakes in a wide pot. If necessary, break the spaghetti in half so it fits.

  2. 02

    Bring to a simmer

Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, moving the pasta with tongs so it does not stick. Reduce to a steady simmer.

  3. 03

    Stir as it cooks

Cook uncovered for about 12–16 minutes, stirring often, until the pasta is al dente. If the liquid runs low before the pasta is cooked, add hot water a little at a time. If too loose, simmer briefly to reduce.

  4. 04

    Finish with basil

Take off the heat and tear in the basil. Let stand for 2 minutes, toss, and taste for seasoning. Serve immediately.
